Carefree Art Night: Mixed Media Artists Marilyn and Terry Alexander
Masters of metal, guardians of glass, Marilyn and Terry Alexander turned a post-retirement hobby into the definitive work in steel and fused glass design. While she prefers the forge and he prefers the kiln, they do it all—together. Fortunately, their talents overlap and complement each other, and their use of vivid acrylic colors and stunning dichroic glasswork gives each piece a strong and ever-changing presence in collectors’ homes, both inside and outside! Come talk to them about their work.
Carefree Art Night: Jewelry Artist Sarah Foster
Hailing from Sedona, Prescott, and now Cave Creek, Sarah Foster creates detailed but airy jewelry; her pieces are lightweight and often convertible, and made from gold, silver, copper, and three kinds of bronze. Sarah uses limitless textures and colors, but her work is always wearable and versatile. In earrings, she aims for “longer but less weight” and her line of affordable pieces is just perfect for gifts. Come see how she makes her magic.
Carefree Art Night: Ceramic Artist Alan Potter
Alan Potter doesn’t just like animals; he holds them in awe, choosing to immortalize them in raku ceramics. Artists put low-fired (with glaze still bubbling) pieces into canisters of sawdust that ignites, and the vacuum creates exciting effects like the crackle glaze, iridescence, and matte finish characteristic of raku. Alan’s horses, donkeys, giraffes, cardinals, owls, and even Yetis holding balloons all bear his signature shapes and textures—and the fact that must maneuver pieces with tails and ears out of smoking containers just underlines his commitment to the (animal) form. Come chat with him about his work!
Carefree Art Night: Mixed Media Artist Julie Hemer
A music major turned English teacher, Julie Hemer’s former side hustle was drawing pencil portraits, but she never felt “home” in the art world until she started working in 3D. Her gourd art and totems are veritable festivals of techniques and materials, such as hand-carved wood, turquoise inlay, cholla skeleton, fiber paste, hand-painted Hopi pottery designs, copper wire, designs drawn with a burn pen—the list is endless. Come see a master at work!
Carefree Art Night: Mixed Media Artist Mimi Damrauer
Textile artist Mimi Damrauer had always wanted to make her own fabric—and she made hers from paper! By painting multiple layers of acrylic paint and using stamps she carves herself, she arranges colors and patterns, then stitches the pieces together like a quilt. She then lays her finished piece over a wood panel, creating bold, deceptively simple pieces with lots of color and texture. Come chat with her about her work.
Carefree Art Night: Jewelry Artist Zac Kothrade
Flagstaff silversmith Zac Kothrade works in argentium silver, a special alloy that has a lower copper content and a touch of germanium, both of which means this jewelry has a much slower tarnish rate than those made from sterling silver. Zac’s work is classic, clean, and contemporary, primarily silver with gold accents and, maybe most importantly, is always wearable and comfortable, great for dressing up and dressing down. Come meet the artist and see why he chooses argentium over sterling.
